Brexit python

Well, you know how much of a joke Brexit has become when the Dutch PM compares poor Theresa May to a Monty Python character.

“Look, I have every respect for Theresa May,” Rutte said in an interview with the Dutch broadcaster WNL on Sunday. “She reminds me occasionally of that character from Monty Python where all the arms and legs are cut off but he then tells the opponent: ‘Let’s call it a draw.’ She’s incredible. She goes on and on. At the same time, I do not blame her, but British politics.”

That was a priceless scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but the #BrexitMayhem is showing that truth can be funnier than fiction. I have lost track of the number of things the UK Parliament has voted on, sometimes for, sometimes against, sometimes for and against, sometimes for or against, sometimes for and/or against, sometimes.......just mayhem.

They can now go on to vote that England must win the  World Cup, the Ashes, the 6 Nations (oops, they just lost that one), the Miss Universe contest, the Rubik’s Cube Championship, and be voted the Country with the Best Food. Meaningless votes, of course, but not more meaningless than many of those Brexit votes.

And yet......she may still get her deal. As the deadline nears, more and more hard core Brexiteers are afraid that it is either now or never. A delay could well mean a plunge into Brexiternity. A delay could also take all the gumption out of all sides, like a bicycle tire going flat, leaving nothing but exhausted Pythons behind. While Rutte used the comparison only for May, after a delay it will probably apply to all the protagonists in the fight - resulting in a permanent draw.

And to modestly take some credit - just a reminder that I wrote within a week of the Brexit vote in 2016 that there will never be a meaningful Brexit. So whether its May’s deal or no Brexit at all (the only 2 realistic options left), that looks like it will be proved correct.
